Health & Safety
Essential safety guidance for working with ready-mix concrete on your site.
Working with concrete requires proper precautions. Whether you're a homeowner or an experienced contractor, please read and follow this safety guidance before your delivery arrives.
Contact with Wet Concrete
Alkali burns from wet concrete can result in skin ulceration that may require medical treatment. Eye contact can cause severe irritation, inflammation, or serious alkali burns that may lead to permanent damage.
If Contact Occurs
- Skin: Wash the affected area immediately with clean water for at least 20 minutes. Remove any contaminated clothing. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
- Eyes: Rinse immediately with clean water for at least 20 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek urgent medical attention.
- Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water and seek immediate medical advice.
Essential Equipment
Required Protective Equipment
The following PPE must be worn by anyone working with or near wet concrete.
Impervious Gloves
Heavy-duty waterproof gloves to prevent skin contact with wet concrete. Standard gardening gloves are not sufficient.
Eye Protection
Safety goggles or glasses to protect against splashes. Essential when pouring, vibrating, or finishing concrete.
Long-Sleeved Clothing
Cover all exposed skin. Avoid shorts and t-shirts when working with concrete. Tuck trousers into boots.
Safety Boots
Waterproof wellington boots or steel-toe safety boots. Concrete inside boots is the most common cause of burns.
Vehicle & Equipment Safety
Our delivery vehicles are large and heavy. Please observe the following when a truck is on or near your site:
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle at all times, especially when it is reversing or manoeuvring.
- Keep children and pets well away from the delivery area.
- Do not stand beneath the concrete chute or near moving parts of the vehicle.
- Follow the driver's instructions at all times — they are trained in safe delivery procedures.
- Establish an exclusion zone around the truck during discharge.

Site Access & Preparation
- Ensure the route for our vehicle is clear of obstacles, overhead cables, and low branches.
- The ground must be firm and level enough to support a fully loaded vehicle.
- Identify and protect any underground services (drains, cables, pipes) along the access route.
- We are not responsible for damage to driveways, kerbs, verges, or underground services caused by our vehicles.
- If access is restricted, consider booking a concrete pump to reach the pour site safely.
Slips, Trips & Manual Handling
- Wet concrete creates extremely slippery surfaces. Wear safety footwear with good grip at all times.
- Keep walkways and barrow runs clear of debris, tools, and trailing cables.
- Lay boards over soft ground to create stable barrow runs.
- Concrete is extremely heavy (approximately 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre). Use proper lifting techniques.
- Take regular breaks — concrete work is physically demanding.
